Replacing A Sparger Saves
Seafood Company Reduced Cycle Time
This seafood company replaced a sparging system used to bring 500 gallon fish boiling pots to 212°F. Food safety was the company's main concern so exact temperature control mattered to the food process engineers. Secondary issues were the cycle times for a batch of fish and the energy used to heat the cook pots.
The company came to Hydro-Thermal needing expertise in heating process water. Hydro-Thermal custom designs steam heaters, known as EZ Heater®, specifically for process water heating. This energy efficient 3 way valve heats water to precise temperatures.
The seafood company installed the steam injection heaters to heat water from 60°F to boiling temperature while filling the pots. The cook pot could then maintain temperature while the fish cooked to perfection. With little or no wait for the cook pot to reach boiling point, cycle times for a batch of fish took half the time it did with the sparging system.
In addition, by replacing the sparger, energy savings of 28% were immediately realized due to the energy efficiency features of the steam valve.
Process conditions considered by Hydro-Thermal engineers to configure this system included:
| Water flow rates: | 235 gallons per minute |
| Water inlet temperature: | 60°F |
| Water outlet temperature: | 212°F |
| Steam Pressure: | 69 psig |
