Major Organic Fruit Producer Uses Direct Steam Injection
A large prune packaging company in California (USA) seeking organic certification was using a 5000 gallon [18.9 KL] sparged tank to heat hot water for their utility water needs throughout the plant. The sparged tank was not very old, but leaked due to the violent action of sparging, and, did not supply the needed hot water during peak demand times.
A steam heater for water only, the EZ Heater®, was installed as part of a skid to supply utility water. The EZ Heater heats water to precise temperatures and in this plant supplies a new 2000 gallon buffer tank. With the Hydro-Thermal steam heater, process or utility fluid flows through the 3-way valve and comes in direct contact with the valve steam. A level sensor in the tank triggers the EZ Heater to add hot water automatically when the water reaches a certain level. Even at peak demand times, the EZ Heater easily supplies the needed water heated to the right temperature.
The plant reports that maintenance and plant downtime is no longer an issue. They also have significantly reduced energy expenses by using the energy efficient direct steam injection system. This plant is pursuing organic certification and looking into other applications for the Hydro-Thermal 3 way valves.
