Pulp & Paper Mill Replaces Sparger to Heat Recycled Stock to Optimal Temperature with DSI
Sparging steam into a fiber line through a small number of injection points, this recycled mill struggled with uneven heating of recycled fiber stock. Inconsistent heating resulted in inefficient bleaching. Hot spots contributed to fiber degradation and excessive scaling, compromising stock yield and quality and necessitating quarterly acid boilouts. Process engineers sought to more precisely add heat to the bleaching process, reducing the amount of bleaching chemicals required and minimizing the boilout routine.
The solution was to install a Solaris® straight-through direct steam heater that delivered immediate process improvements.The patented 3 way valve heater features rotary choked flow and discharges steam into stock through hundreds of injection points at very high velocity.This process assures instantaneous condensation and homogeneous heating of stock.
The mill reports no fiber degradation problems, chemical usages is lower and saves the mill thousands of dollars each month.The drop in chemical usage provides a significant reduction in volatile emissions. Boilouts have been reduced to once a year instead of quarterly.
