Whitewater Heating with Direct Steam Injection Saves Energy and Maintenance Costs

This mill was familiar with direct steam injection technology because it utilized it on other paper lines. When they wanted to build a new paper machine line, start-up speed was an important consideration.They needed to heat a 50,000 gallon [189 kl] white water system from 80°F [26.6°C] to 110°F [43.3°C] in 30 minutes. The industrial Hydroheater^® was installed outside the white water chest to heat and recirculate white water in the chest.The force provided by the high velocity steam jet in the Hydroheater eliminates the need for an external recirculation pump. The Hydroheater varies its own steam flow depending on the individual requirements of each of the three heating applications: start-up, system temperature maintenance and boilout.

The mill has realized several savings with the Hydroheater. First, energy savings compared to other heating systems is near 30%. Second, a recirculating pump is not needed because of the turbulent action of the steam jet in the Hydroheater. Third, the Hydroheater requires little maintenance. These cost savings have contributed to the mills sustainability successes.
