Biofuels Production Process Heating
Biofuels Production
Hydro-Thermal has a strong legacy in first generation Biofuels starch conversion, with the one-and-only Jetcooker™ in over 125 ethanol plants worldwide, producing 6+ billion gallons annually. This knowledge has been successfully leveraged to second generation Biofuels with the patented Solaris® steam cooker valve used in cellulosic pretreatment.
The industry standard Jetcooker has been featured in numerous articles including this on "Benefits of Automating Shear in Starch Cooking" which appeared in The Biofuels Journal.
Jetcooker for Starch Conversion in Biofuels Production
One of the key stages of ethanol production is the enzymatic liquefaction of starch present in grain. Mash from a dry grind or wet mill process is blended with water and enzymes and then pumped through a K500 Series Hydroheater® direct steam injection Jetcooker where steam is applied to rapidly hydrolyze the starch.

Automatic Adjustment for More Ethanol Production
The effectiveness of starch cookout and conversion has a direct relationship on total ethanol production and yield. The K5 Autopilot upgrades the performance of the Jetcooker so that product flow path and shear are automatically maintained at optimum conditions. The benefits of the K5 Autopilot are optimized mechanical shear of starch molecules, lower enzyme dosages, maximized sugar conversion and higher ethanol yield.

Cellulosic Pretreatment
Solaris direct steam injection Hydroheaters play a key role in biochemical pretreatment processes for cellulosic ethanol. Solaris sufficiently hydrolyzes and opens up the structure of lignin-based biomass feedstocks to allow efficient and effective enzyme hydrolysis of the hemicellulosic sugars. The straight-through patented design of the Solaris is ideal for thick slurries and high fiber content common to a wide variety of biomass feedstocks. Solaris utilizes internally modulated high velocity steam which eliminates clogging and plugging. Solaris can be designed and constructed around specific process conditions, such as high temperature, low pH and high pressures.
Are you ready for the second generation of Biofuels production?
Unlike heat exchangers or spargers, the Hydroheater is designed only for your process conditions and unique application. We need to know a few things about your conditions, such as temperature range, steam pressure, and flow rates to size a heater specifically for you.
